The daylight was barely peeking over the omni-grey skies. Already, the students were trudging in, wishing that they were anywhere but here and wondering if Thanksgiving break was ever going to come. There was a light mist falling down on the black macadam lot, forcing the students to pull up their hoods and open umbrellas before they reached the school building. This was the same routine for almost everyone morning of the school year. Everything was in order, except for one thing...
A baby blue '66 Ford Mustang rumbled up to the curb, coming to a stop. From the passenger seat, Nathalie glanced out the diver's side window at the gloomy-looking brick building that loomed in her line of sight. This was where she would be going to school now? The man in the seat next to her noticed her disgruntled expression, "I know it's not your school in New Orleans, but it'll be ok, I've heard the kids are nice..." She was silent for a few moments. "Oh come on, Nat, where's my little social butterfly? You'll be alright," he cajoled, trying to lift her spirits. He knew she wasn't happy about having to leave her sister and grandmother behind in New Orleans, but, with her social skills, she'd probably not have any trouble fitting in.
"I guess..." she said, trying to think positively but only managing to sound half-hearted. Saying goodbye to her father, she got out of the car and started walk across the parking lot, shivering a little in the cool fall air. The temperatures here were like dead winter in New Orleans, and she knew they would get colder yet... with snow. She shuddered at the thought and wrapped her light jacket (the heaviest item of clothing that she owned) even tighter around her body and kept her head down, hoping that she could keep the cold air away.
Note to self: buy a coat... she thought as she entered the school building. People were staring at her as she made her way to the office. It made her a little uncomfortable, but, since she was the weird new girl, she guessed it was to be expected. After her trip to the office, she knew she had to turn her attitude around if she was ever going to survive long enough to get back to New Orleans. She exited the office, putting a bright smile on her face and trying to greet everyone she met as pleasantly as possible.
